These events are \nreferred to as Equinoxes and occurred today, March 20th at 4:29 am MDT \n(Vernal Equinox \u2013 the first day of Spring) and will again on September \n22nd at 2:02 pm MDT (Autumnal Equinox \u2013 the first day of fall). The word\n equinox is derived from two Latin words \u2013 aequus (equal) and nox \n(night). At the equator, the sun is directly overhead at noon on these \ntwo equinoxes. The \u201cnearly\u201d equal hours of day and night is due to \nrefraction of sunlight, or a bending of the light\u2019s rays that causes the\n sun to appear above the horizon when the actual position of the sun is \nbelow the horizon.
