Satellites can detect this moisture and the data can then \nbe used to calculate what\u2019s known as the \u201ctotal precipitable water\u201d \ncontent of the atmosphere \u2014 the amount of water that could theoretically\n precipitate if the conditions were ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visible in this data imagery are the bands of moisture that encircle \nthe equator, along with so-called \u201catmospheric rivers\u201d that transport \nmoisture from these areas to higher latitudes.
