This year’s American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in Washington, DC, drew over 30,000 attendees (in-person & virtual) and was filled with countless opportunities to engage with NOAA partners, customers, and science enthusiasts from around the world. At the exhibit the team showcased NOAA’s cutting-edge technology, including the coronagraph recently launched on GOES-U.

Beyond these achievements, the VizLab team also played a pivotal role in supporting NOAA’s education mission. One of the highlights was the participation of VizLab intern and NOAA Hollings Scholar Aurora Baker who exemplified IMSG’s commitment to supporting future generations of scientists and educators. Aurora delivered two impactful presentations on NOAA’s Data in the Classroom program, which provides teachers and students with accessible tools to explore real-world environmental challenges. Her oral presentation, “Tackling the Last Mile – How NOAA’s Data in the Classroom is Bridging the Gap Between Earth Science Open Data and the Needs of Educators,” was featured at an AGU session and in the NOAA exhibit hall, drawing attention to the importance of making NOAA data more findable, accessible, and usable in educational settings.

Data in the Classroom has experienced remarkable growth, with a nearly 500% increase in users over the past five years. This program equips teachers with user-friendly NOAA data visualizations, empowering students to use real data as evidence to explore pressing environmental topics like heat islands, coral bleaching, and sea level rise. Aurora’s work with the VizLab this summer directly supported these efforts, helping to enhance NOAA’s education and outreach while addressing the goals of NESDIS and NOAA’s Office of Education.

IMSG is proud to support the prestigious NOAA Hollings Scholarship Program and the next generation of environmental leaders. The success at AGU24 is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of the VizLab team, their interns, and their ongoing efforts to promote NOAA science and data to diverse audiences.

With AGU24 in the books, we’re looking forward to bringing the same energy and innovation to AGU25 in New Orleans.

Great job, Team IMSG!

December 2024-Washington D.C. IMSG’s VizLab team, under the leadership of Rafa de Ameller, received high praise from NESDIS Director Dr. Steve Volz for their outstanding contributions to the NOAA booth at AGU24.
