10 May Tropical Cyclone Donna in the South Pacific Ocean
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite captured this true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Donna in the South Pacific on May 8, 2017.
According to USA Today, Donna’s winds reached 130 miles per hour on Sunday (May 7), making it the most powerful tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere in May.
(May 9) According to a report from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Donna is located approximately 138 nautical miles north-northeast of Noumea, New Caledonia, and has tracked southeastward at 10 miles per hour over the past six hours. The cyclone has maximum sustained winds of 103 mph with gusts up to 126 mph; however, JWTC forecasters say that favorable environmental conditions are deteriorating and will weaken the system over the next 48 hours. Donna is also moving into cooler waters, which will facilitate its transition to an extra-tropical system in the next 24 to 36 hours.
