27 Jul Mississippi River Shines in the Sun

The lower Mississippi River is a ribbon of silver in this image from around 1705Z on July 24, 2015. The Suomi NPP satellite’s sun-synchronous orbit allows the VIIRS instrument to see the oceans, land and rivers under full sun, recording its reflections from bodies of water. At the height of a northern hemisphere summer, after plenty of rain along the Gulf coast, healthy vegetation frames flood plains and urban areas in varied shades of green.
