03 Jan Newest GOES Satellite Imagery Debuts
A winter storm drifts toward the Northeast in this composite image from GOES-16, NOAA’s next-generation geostationary satellite!
Captured at 1:07pm EST on January 15, 2017 and created using several of the 16 spectral channels available on GOES-16’s sophisticated Advanced Baseline Imager, this image is among a handful of preliminary, non-operations images returned from the spacecraft last week.
GOES-16, the first spacecraft in the NOAA’s GOES-R series of geostationary satellites, will provide high-resolution images of weather patterns and atmospheric phenomena that surpass any of the imagery delivered by its GOES predecessors. These more detailed images will allow meteorologists to locate and forecast severe weather with greater accuracy, resulting in more advanced warning that saves lives.
