In this image from the Himawari-8 satellite captured on January 9, 2017, two large low-pressure systems spin in the northern and western regions of the Pacific Ocean.

Himawari-8, the first unit of the Japan Meteorological Agency’s (JMA) third-generation of geostationary satellites, acquires visible, near-infrared and infrared images of the Asia-Pacific region — data which are vital for global geostationary coverage. That’s why NOAA and JMA have agreed to mutual back-up arrangements for their geostationary systems.

True-color images like this one are produced using a new process called the Simple Hybrid Contrast Stretch (SHCS) method developed by the University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center and NOAA’s Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). This simple algorithm combines four of the spectral bands from the satellite’s imaging instrument — the Advanced Himawari Imager — to create a high-resolution true-color RGB image offering greater clarity than previous AHI true-color images.
