Snow in the Sierra Nevada Range

Snow in the Sierra Nevada Range

This true-color image from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite shows the amount of snow cover in the Sierra Nevada mountains on January 29, 2017.

The series of storms that hit the area over the past several weeks has increased the amount of snow cover dramatically as compared to this time last year. According to NOAA’s National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center (NOHRSC), on January 29, 2017, 70 percent of the Sierra Nevada had snow cover as compared to just 45.4 percent on the same date in 2016. Similarly, the average snow depth on 1/29/17 was estimated at 44.4 inches, whereas is was less than half of that on the same date in 2016.
