04 Apr Severe Weather along the U.S. Gulf Coast
GOES East captured this visible image of a large storm system over Alabama, Georgia and western Florida yesterday, April 3, 2017, at 1545 UTC.
The threat for severe weather will continue through midweek in this area, and then the threat will shift into the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday (April 6).
NOAA’s GOES satellites orbit 35,800 km (22,300 miles) above Earth’s equator in a geostationary orbit, meaning they travel around the globe at speeds equal to Earth’s rotation, constantly monitoring a particular area of the planet to provide a series geographic images over time. These constant “eyes in the sky” are critical for identifying atmospheric circulations and severe weather.
