Cyclone Vardah Makes Landfall near Chennai, India

The NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite captured this true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Vardah in the Bay of Bengal on December 11, 2016.

According to reports from the the Indian Meteorological Department, this “very severe” cyclone made landfall near the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu and neighboring Andhra Pradesh earlier today (December 12).

The most recent report from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center notes that Vardah is located approximately 718 nautical miles southwest of Calcutta, India, and moving westward at 10 miles per hour. The storm has winds of approximately 85 miles per hour. Now that the storm is over land, forecasters expect rapid weakening to occur within the next 24 hours.
