06 Mar Tropical Cyclone Enawo Closes In on Madagascar
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite captured this true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Enawo in the Indian Ocean on March 5, 2017.
Forecasters with the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JWTC) report that Enawo is located approximately 399 nautical miles north-northwest of La Reunion Island, to the east of Madagascar, and tracking westward at roughly 7 miles per hour. A subtropical ridge to the southeast is steering the storm toward Madagascar, where it is expected to make landfall on Tuesday morning. According to USA Today, Enawo is expected to be the strongest storm to make landfall in Madagascar in “at least four years.”
Enawo has maximum sustained winds of 103 miles per hour with gusts up to 126 mph and, according to the JWTC, the storm will likely intensify over the next 12 hours.
