VIIRS Spies Deadly Storms over the Midwest/Southern Plains

This April 30, 2017, true-color image from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite shows the massive storm system that tore through the Mississippi Valley and southern Plains states on April 29 and 30, 2017.

According to several media reports, including this one from the Los Angeles Times, strong storms erupted over parts of the southern Plains and Mississippi Valley this past weekend. A variety of media outlets reported the storms caused the deaths of at least 13 people, produced widespread heavy rain resulting in flash floods, high winds that downed trees and left thousands without power, a late-season blizzard in Kansas, and several tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service, the severe weather is expected to continue today as the agency says strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes will be possible this afternoon and evening (5/1) over portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S.
