08 May West Mims Fire in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite captured this color-enhanced infrared image of the West Mims Fire burning in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge on May 7, 2017.
This image was created with data from VIIRS channels 4 (red, an infrared channel useful for detecting burn area), 2 (green), and 1 (blue).
The fire, which began on April 6, was estimated at 130,942 acres and authorities say the blaze may not be fully contained for months. As of yesterday, May 7, 2017, the fire was only 12 percent contained. More than 500 people are involved in fighting the blaze, according to fire information website InciWeb, and the fire has forced the evacuation of the nearby small town of St. George.
